Richard Smyth is a graphics operator and a freelance journalist, photographer and videographer, video and podcast editor, who has been working in the industry since early 2020, before embarking on a University degree in Multimedia Sports Journalism at the University of Northampton.
He took part in the BBC School News Report in his early years of secondary school and this helped cement Richard’s interest in the industry as well give him an early insight into how the world of journalism worked.
With experience in TV and radio studios, Richard is comfortable in vision mixing, autocue, sound, lighting, camera operations, editing, graphic design and radio playout.
After initially writing for Over the Turnstile as an Irish Premiership and Football League match reporter, Richard became Northern Ireland International editor.
When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, Richard embarked on a new challenge, starting his own multimedia motorsport website ‘The Apex Motorsport’ initially as a website and a YouTube channel. A podcast soon joined the roster of programmes created by Richard, along with an amplified social media output strategy.
After gaining media accreditation to the British GT Championship at the start of the 2021 season, Richard completed two full seasons in the Championship, with coverage extending to the GB3 and GB4 Championships at the start of the 2022 season when he was made series editor for ‘F1 Feeder Series’.
He has provided match reports for NLive Radio from the United Counties League and FA Vase. He has also interviewed members of Team GB’s Olympic and Paralympic squad, including Maisie Summers-Newton for the National Lottery, 300 days before the start of the games.
Richard then extended his multi-sport portfolio by working for Team Northern Ireland at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. The role included being the Press Attaché representative, interviewing athletes, creating social media graphics and assisting local news networks with content. His content was used on BBC Newsline, Belfast News Letter, Belfast Live, Local Women Sport Magazine and many others.
Richard dreams of one day reporting on the Monaco Grand Prix from the paddock, while also reporting on Northern Ireland at a major finals tournament in football… although one appears more realistic than the other!
